A very lightly hopped malty aroma. Light flavour with a bit of creaminess and just a little bit of hops. The malt character is somewhat sweet with some flavours of toasted rolls and a subtle honey aspect. This is a sessionable and mildly flavoured cream ale.

A yummy cream ale. There a few mild fruit esters and a bit of a bitter bite at first which fits with a British style Cream Ale, and then a creamy mouthfeel supplemented with a strong nutty malt flavour, a bit like sunflower seeds, that I find extremely appetizing. This beer is fairly light, refreshing but with a satisfying malty body. A good ale on a summer day: pairs easily with all kinds of foods, thirst quenching, tasty and lends itself to big gulps.

A mild creamed corn aroma with a hint of hops, something oddly lager-like (turns out it is aged with lager yeast - pretty cool) and a touch of almost tart bitterness.

A toasted bread taste with some bitterness, this carries on in the aftertaste as well, it's nice and quite an appetizing flavour. At times I pick up faint nearly smoky roasty flavours. Overall this is a refreshing beer and a highly quaffable ale perfect for the canoe trips the name implies and afternoons on patios (you know, when the weather finally warms up).

A full gold in a glass. Roasty aroma with a hint of fruit esters and a faint touch of grain. Well carbonated but a creamy mouthfeel. Umami and roast flavours dominate; overall well balanced with moderate sweetness and bitterness. Cameron's Cream Ale is sessionable and very pleasant, not overly strong tasting but nice.

Our waitress at the Split Crow was extremely helpful providing a sample of all four of their unique beers free of charge (we bought several more after sampling) and answering my questions to the best of her ability. These beers are brewed by Garrison specially for the Split Crow pub so they aren't technically brewpubs but they do have beers you can't get anywhere else.

I was disappointed by the inability to get ABV for every beer but was impressed to see suggested beer and food pairings in the menu. There is also a Split Crow pub in Halifax and Bedford, Nova Scotia.

Split Crow Cream Ale 4.4%

A very nutty aroma and flavour that lingers roastily in the aftertaste. Malty and a bit hoppy and bitter as well. Gold in a glass. a very tasty beer with a bit of a watery mouthfeel that keeps it refreshing.

Rafter Red Ale 5.0%

A very sweet, nearly sticky aroma; hints of caramel and coffee in there. Considering how pleasantly pungent the aroma was, the taste is relatively understated. Mostly malty and hoppy with some bitter roasty with dark tones that leave a somewhat smoky aftertaste. Don't get me wrong, the taste is still very good just a notch of intensity below the aroma.

Shippey's IPA ? %

The weaker of the bunch, not hoppy at all. Yellow, fizzy... really nothing much to it, an IPA in name only - in the style of Alexander Keith's. The slightest touch of citrus. [Almost a slight touch of citrus in the taste (could just be leftover from other beers).]

Split Crow's Proprietor's Ale ? %

Light, malty, sweet, slightly floral a little appley, a little nutty. A nice yellow fizzy refreshing beer with a bit of character. Pale gold in a glass.

Begbie Cream Ale - Mount Begbie Brewing Company (Canada - British Columbia - Revelstoke)

Very smooth and creamy. Nice malty smell. A little bitter at first but then it moves into smooth sweet toasted tastiness. It's very nice.

Came in a big bottle (650 ml) with an interesting label and a good story, too bad the bottle cap was so plain.

Sleeman Brewing (Canada)

I like variety packs and this one from Sleeman Brewing is a good one: the twelve pack includes three bottles of four of their different brews and each one has a distinct flavour and each is highly enjoyable.

Sleeman Cream Ale (Canada) 5.0%


A golden yellow beer, it has a slightly skunky smell and taste though more so in the smell than in the taste. A little bitter and tangy with a malty sweetness rounding out the taste. Not the creamiest of cream ales but it tastes good nonetheless.



Sleeman Honey Brown (Canada) 5.2%

A warm brown colour in a glass with a pleasantly frothy head. Smoothly sweet malt taste with a hops tanginess that is mild and mellowed with honey.


Sleeman Light (Canada) 4.0%

Very clear gold in a glass colour in a glass. Smells a little skunky and nutty. It tastes sweet, a little skunky and malty. Quite enjoyable and surprisingly flavourful for a light beer.

Sleeman Original Draught (Canada) 5.0%

Another good beer from Sleeman's. It is gold in a glass. Smells barely skunky, light and fresh. It tastes watery (but not in a bad way) and barely malty, skunky, sort of sweet and fruity which surprised me a little. A noticeably different beer from the light beer, certainly the Sleeman Light isn't based off of the Original Draught. I appreciate that the light beer is it's own brew rather than just a watered down version of a different beer.
